“Black Lake” is a sonorous slice of soulful R&B from Sydney-based artist, Wallace. The track opens with an unassuming instrumental hook, but it quickly builds into a richly-textured soundscape of swelling strings, husky vocals and rippling beats.
It’s a step in a new direction for Wallace, moving away from the upbeat and bubbly vibes of her earlier singles “Raffled Roses” and “Diaspora.” Everything slows down in “Black Lake” – the instrumentals resonate with heavier and darker textures, and the rhythm is stripped back and minimalist. Sonically, the track is powerful; the biting beats are juxtaposed with the smooth, full-bodied bass, creating a mesmerizing sonic depth.
“With you / I’ll descend for miles and miles with you / Deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper,” she sings, drawing you in further with each refrain. With its soaring strings and pulsing piano, "Black Lake" would be right at home in a James Bond film.
Co-written with Eskimo Joe’s Joel Quartermain, “Black Lake” is the latest track from Wallace’s debut EP Pole to Pole, which is set for release on October 13.
