It’s cloudy, windy, and freezing outside. Teeth chattering, I have no choice but to walk out into the cold, headphones on. Time to listen to some tunes that take me elsewhere, so I can stop myself from giving up and staying home.
Thanks to Los Angeles-based surf-rock experts Cayucas, my current favorite escape is the California coast. "Waffles" opens with gentle strums that immediately make me feel like I’m sitting in golden sand, and as the song slowly progresses, I feel although I’m watching calm ocean waves roll endlessly into the horizon. The colorful lyrics conjure up all kinds of nostalgic images, such as “Waffles in the toaster, left a beer can on the coaster.” For the short duration of this track, I'm lost in nostalgic memories of being a kid, eating toaster waffles for breakfast, and looking forward to heading outside for an endless summer day with friends.
This past August, Cayucas released their latest album, Hangin’ on the Westside. The band is no stranger to rolling out solid surf rock, with some great singles that have been featured here in the past.
A demo version of “Waffles” was released last month, which you can listen to here.
